Documents and residence permit in Italy: the vocabulary you need
When you arrive in Italy, many procedures are written in bureaucratic Italian that is hard even for good speakers. This guide collects the words you will meet most often, with plain English explanations.
Este guia está disponível por enquanto em inglês e italiano. O importante são os termos em italiano: são as palavras que você vai ouvir e ler.
Identity documents
These are the documents most often requested at counters, banks and post offices.
- il passaporto

The residence permit procedure
In many cases the first application is sent with a kit available at post offices; then the Questura calls you in for fingerprints. Details change depending on the type of permit: always check the official instructions.

Useful verbs and expressions
These words appear on forms and at counters. Learn the form in which you will hear them.

How to study them
Do not learn single words only: repeat whole sentences aloud. For example: "Devo rinnovare il permesso di soggiorno" (I have to renew my residence permit) or "Ho un appuntamento in Questura alle dieci" (I have an appointment at the Questura at ten).
Pay attention to the difference between residenza (official, at the Comune) and domicilio (where you actually live): on forms the question is often different.
